Program Foundations

The interface of three large areas of knowledge (Social Systems, Environmental Planning, Applied Ecology and Geosciences) form the structure of the program, defining the main research lines of the program: 1) Environment and Society, 2) Ecological Systems and Geosciences, 3) Landscape Management. These research lines enable the integration of different aspects of human and biosystems development, through a multiscalar dynamic view of different territorial units.

In the figure below, we present a diagram with the interdisciplinary research lines, resulting from the interaction among the areas of knowledge that form the structure of the program:

The figure shows how the Program is organized, with its three research areas (Landscape Management and Geosciences, Ecological Systems and Environment and Society) shown through overlapping and intersecting circles in the left portion of the image. The intersections refer to Applied Ecology, which integrates the Ecological Systems and Environment and Society lines; Environmental Planning, which integrates the Ecological Systems and Landscape Management lines; and the Social Systems, which integrate the Environment and Society and Landscape Management lines. In the right portion of the figure, the intersection between the areas can be seen again through overlapping circles, but in this case indicating the identity of the program, focused on interdisciplinarity.
